About doulas

What does a doula do?

A doula gives continuous emotional, physical and informational support before, during and after birth. I don't do medical tasks. Your midwife or doctor handles those, and I support you alongside them.

Does having a doula actually help?

Research reviews have found that continuous support in labour is linked to fewer caesareans, more spontaneous vaginal births, and parents feeling more satisfied with their birth. Read the Cochrane review.

Can my husband or partner still be involved?

Absolutely. I'm not there to replace him. I help partners feel confident and included, show them comfort measures, and give them a break when they need one.

Faith

Do I have to share your faith to work with you?

Not at all. Every family is welcome. I never push my beliefs; faith is simply part of who I am and how I care for you.

Will you pray with me?

If you'd like me to, yes, gladly. I can also bring Scripture into your birth space. It's always your choice.

Your birth

Do you support hospital births and epidurals?

Yes. I support births at home, in hospital and at birth centres, and whatever choices you make along the way, including medical pain relief.

I'm planning a VBAC, or a caesarean. Can you still support me?

Yes. For a VBAC I'll help you prepare and advocate for your wishes. For a planned caesarean I can help you plan the gentlest birth possible, support you before and after surgery, and help with skin-to-skin and breastfeeding.

When are you on call?

From 37 weeks until your baby arrives, 24 hours a day. Before that, I answer messages within 24 hours.

What if I go into labour before you're on call?

Call me anyway. I'll do everything I can to come to you. If I truly can't, a trusted, like-minded backup doula will be there for you.

Booking and payment

When should I book?

Most families book in the second trimester, but it's never too late to reach out.

What areas do you serve?

Calgary, Okotoks and High River. If you're nearby, just ask.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes. The $400 retainer is due when you sign, and the rest can be split into instalments as long as it's paid in full by 36 weeks.

What if I can't afford a doula?

Please reach out anyway. I never want finances to be the reason a family goes without support, and we'll talk about what's possible for you.

Can family or friends give your services as a gift?

Yes. Grandparents, church families and friends often ask how they can help. I offer gift certificates for birth and postpartum support in any amount.
